HITT Decorating Co. was founded as a small, family-owned business in Warren and Myrtle Hitt’s home in Arlington, Virginia. Their first job was an enclosed porch at a residence in Falls Church, Virginia. The rest, as they say, was history. By 1939, the company earned its first $100,000 and grew to 20 team members. Learn More 1940s W.A. Hitt Decorating Co. continues to grow despite wartime challenges and labor shortages. The company incorporates in 1943, changing its name to HITT Decorating–Contracting Co. Inc., and moving to the first office in Arlington, Virginia. Learn More 1950s As the industry moves from plaster to drywall, HITT Decorating–Contracting Co. Inc. expands to house construction in the Northern Virginia area. The company reaches $1 million in revenue and grows to nearly 60 team members. Inc. grows. We’re awarded our first $1 million project and the first large-scale commercial project. HITT hires our first receptionist, labor director, safety director, marketing director, and project accountant. The decade ends with the passing of our founder, Warren Hitt. HITT Decorating Co. started out of the Hitt home with just six employees. The first job for the company was an enclosed porch at the residence of Grayson Ahalt in Falls Church, Virginia. 1939 W.A. Hitt Decorating Co. earns its first $100,000 year and reaches 20 employees by 1939. 1943 HITT Decorating–Contracting Co. continues to grow and is incorporated. The effects of wartime are felt as half of our team members are called to serve their country. 1948 W.A. Hitt Decorating Co. rebrands to HITT Decorating - Contracting Co. Inc. and moves to 1400 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 1950 HITT Decorating–Contracting Co. Inc. begins residential construction in the Washington, DC area as the industry moves from plaster to drywall. 1954 Peanut M&Ms become a favorite treat to take to client meetings, a tradition that lives on to this day. Inc. reaches $1 million in revenue and the company grows to nearly 60 employees. 1956 Russell Hitt joins the firm in the office full-time after working in the field since he was 10 years old. 1972 HITT Decorating–Contracting Co. Inc. is awarded its first large-scale commercial project for Quadrangle Development at 2023 M Street NW in Washington, DC. 1977 Page Communications in Vienna, VA becomes HITT’s first $1 million project. 1978 Founder Warren Hitt passes away, passing on company leadership to his son Russell Hitt. 1982 Co-Chairman Jim Millar joins HITT as a laborer. 1984 Co-Chairman Brett Hitt starts in the office as an assistant project manager, and HITT holds our first annual Subcontractor Appreciation Day. 1989 HITT Decorating–Contracting Co. Inc. rebrands to HITT Contracting, Inc, and we installed our first tower crane on the Washington Hospital Center campus, literally taking our business to new heights. 1993 HITT Contracting, Inc. headquarters move to 2704 Dorr Avenue in Fairfax, VA. 1999 The company reorganizes into market sectors to offer expert services, and the subcontractor relationships department is established. 2001 ENR TOP 100: HITT joins the Engineering News-Record’s Top 100 General Contractors List. 2004 Revenues top $500 million. 2005 HITT is named a “Best Place to Work” by the Washington Business Journal and a “Great Place to Work” by Washingtonian Magazine. 2005 HITT opens a regional office in South Florida. 2006 HITT builds a new LEED Silver certified headquarters at 2900 Fairview Park Drive in Falls Church, VA, where it remains today. 2011 HITT launches its Hospitality sector to deliver construction services to the world’s most recognizable hotel brands. 2012 HITT celebrates its 75th anniversary. 2013 Brett Hitt is named a Most Admired CEO by Washington Business Journal. 2014 HITT celebrates its 20th anniversary of Subcontractor Appreciation Day and is named a Washington Business Journal Best Places to Work for the 10th year in a row. 2015 Russell Hitt is honored with the Virginia Tech Myers-Lawson School of Construction Award and is inducted into the 2015 Arlington Business Hall of Fame 2016 HITT takes on Texas and The Big Apple by acquiring Trademark Construction in Houston and Americon in New York City. The new business units align HITT to serve our clients in two of the largest markets in the US. In the same year, we are named #1 Top Workplace among large companies by The Washington Post. 2017 A Year of Milestones: HITT expands to California, opening a new office in Santa Clara focused on corporate interiors and mission critical construction. In its 80th year, HITT welcomes the 1,000th team member and makes history by appointing new principal leaders: CEO Kim Roy and Co-Presidents Jeremy Bardin and Drew Mucci. 2018 HITT opens two new offices in Richmond and Raleigh, and joins ENR’s Top 50 General Contractors List for the first time at #43. We break ground on Co|Lab, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to bringing ideas to life and building change within our industry. HITT is awarded Best Corporate Responsibility Program by NAIOP MD|DC. 2019 HITT opens offices in Dallas and Los Angeles, and is named ENR Mid-Atlantic’s Contractor of the Year. Co|Lab, HITT’s innovation space, opens as the first LEED v4 BD+C Platinum Commercial Project in the Washington, DC area. For the fifth year in a row, HITT ranks as a Washington Post Top Workplace. ENR Mid-Atlantic names HITT “Contractor of the Year” in recognition of our continued success and growth. 2020 With measured growth, HITT expands its services in the Southeast region to include mission-critical, power-intensive data storage facilities. The year ends with the mournful news of the passing of beloved Chairman Emeritus Russell Hitt. Known as a friend, mentor, leader and philanthroper, and for his incredible work ethic and genuine care for the people around him, Russell’s legacy lives on in the core values of the company he helped build. 2021 Beep Boop Beep! Robots S.A.M. and Spot join the team; in partnership with Clearpath Robotics and Boston Dynamics, HITT begins deploying robots on the jobsite to support team member and subcontractor productivity, collect data, and provide visibility to clients from afar. HITT also welcomes more than 350 new team members to 12 offices across the nation. 2022 The HITT Contracting Foundation, a 501(c)3 focused on education, health, and community giving is launched with a $10 million seed investment from company earnings and the estate of Chairman Emeritus Russell Hitt. HITT opens two more offices in Austin and San Francisco and is named “Best National General Contractor” by the American Subcontractors Association in Washington, DC.
