Overview

HHMI is a science philanthropy whose mission is to advance biomedical research and science education for the benefit of humanity and to empower exceptional scientists and students to pursue fundamental questions about living systems. Headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, HHMI employs more than 3,000 individuals across the United States.

The Howard Huges Medical Institute Vivarium Expansion Phases I and II project was an eight-month, design-build, interior fit-out and renovation of a new medical research facility that included the fit-out and expansion of the existing vivarium, the fit-out of an applied physics instrumentation group and the fit-out of an NMR. The resulting space is ISO 7 classified. The vivarium expansions include laboratories for neurological research and experimentation for mice and rats, with several of the

laboratories equipped with structural ceiling grid with a 40-psf rating, clean room ceiling tiles, fume hoods and BSL cabinets; BSL2 and BSL3 rooms; and holding, procedure and surgery rooms.

The project also included VHP (vaporized hydrogen peroxide ports) for all laboratories. The project featured custom-designed and custom-fabricated gas boxes, specialty gases, epoxy floors walls and ceilings, fume hoods, stainless steel tops with stainless steel integral bowels with reverse osmosis water with foot-control access and stainless steel casework, necropsy tables and surgical lights. All lighting, humidity and temperature were designed to be controlled by the building’s DDS system, including remotely operated animal watering and light control to simulate a 24-hour cycle.
