SF OF STONE IN LOBBY
With a focus on productivity and connectivity, Capital One wanted a consolidated campus for employees to work together and build relationships.
Client Goals
As Capital One continued to expand they realized quickly they wanted to add another building to their headquarters campus. Block A was the third building constructed with additional collaboration, workspaces, and a full cafeteria for employees to collaborate in a live-work-play campus.
Design Vision
Supporting the concept that “innovation happens every day at Capital One,” both work and amenity spaces were designed by Arcadis to celebrate the Capital One community and promote opportunities for connection and engagement, while providing a flexible work environment to support a growing and continually evolving business.
Construction Focus
HITT was flexible with finding solutions through challenges such as manpower, covid, supply chain. HITT was nimble with our approach, we had to realize many plans may change, and had to collaborate and communicate effectively with the client and design team.
Virtual Construction
Before a hammer ever swung on-site, we set this workplace up for success by engaging our dedicated virtual construction team. Mock-ups of the space were created to show the client ceiling details including the coordination of lights and how they repeat on the ceilings up the levels. Not only did we model the job utilizing building information modeling (BIM), but our team also laser scanned each floor and compared it directly to the coordinated BIM model.
Unique Finishes
Each of the 20 floors was slightly different than the next with material finishes. With 319 total finishes throughout the project, heavy coordination was needed on every floor.
Material Hoist
While building in the midst of a pandemic made for a challenging experience, our pre-planning set us up for success despite COVID-19-related delays. By encouraging our subcontracting partners to buy and procure material years prior to going on-site and storing them until implementation, we were able to get ahead of the material delays with 90 percent of flooring and 80 percent of lighting procured by November 2021.
Throughout all of these trials (a pandemic, a supply chain crisis, escalating prices, worker shortage, etc.) we continued to forge ahead and accomplish our mission no matter what macro or micro problem we had to overcome. This team was impressive for a number of reasons but none meant more to me than the ownership that we took for our mistakes and the initiative we showed to fix them. Not only did we overcome all the issues outside of our control, we managed to excel. We managed to trim over two months from the original schedule and bring the project in on budget. In doing so we have designed and built an office building that will rival any for uniqueness and beauty.”

Unique Challenges, Smart Solutions
Ambitious projects require carefully constructed solutions
Challenge
Managing deliveries alongside a base building general contractor
Solution
There was a shared delivery schedule and only one area for delivery on the campus so heavy communication and coordination was needed to allow delivery to go smoothly.
Challenge
Importing 25,000 sf of Italian marble
Solution
Due to the material being overseas, all reviews were completed virtually so the team could see. Getting the stone in early and being able to store it by the site helped with lead times and any delays of overseas shipment.
Challenge
Procuring delayed materials during COVID-19 pandemic
Solution
Preplanning was crucial to this project's success. By encouraging our subcontracting partners to buy and procure material years prior to going on-site and storing them until implementation, we were able to get ahead of the material delays with 90 percent of flooring and 80 percent of lighting procured early.
Utilizing Drones to Communicate with Overseas Partners
By utilizing a drone our team was able to identify the floor layout and marble grid pattern. A drone took video footage of a stone section of the floor laid out at the warehouse in Italy and sent it to the team to identify marble grid patterns, floor layouts, and the look of the stone.
