Anniversary Story

Subcontractor Relationships

Taylor Tompkins and Kaitlyn Duffy

Traditions help define who we are, and how we do business now—particularly when it comes to relationships with our Subcontractors. Since opening our doors 80 years ago, we’ve recognized that the Subcontractor community, along with our Suppliers, is critical to HITT’s ability to deliver quality projects for our Clients. These dedicated craftsmen are the backbone of the construction industry; we value their talent and knowledge, and have a deep respect for the relationships we’ve forged.

Key to maintaining and growing these important relationships is our dedicated Subcontractor Relationships team, led by Manager Kaitlyn Duffy and Associate Taylor Tompkins. Together they focus on creating communications to cultivate relationships, establishing new partnerships, and providing guidance for Subcontractors and Suppliers in how to do business with HITT. They act as HITT ambassadors for our partners, and share insights and news with Subcontractors nationwide through the quarterly Subcontractor Connection newsletter. Kaitlyn and Taylor create special events and opportunities to stay connected, such as the 2016 #LOVEOURSUBS tribute campaign.

“While we incorporate technology into our outreach, we value the importance of face-to-face interaction, especially in today’s digital world,” said Kaitlyn. “Our unique open door policy helps us bridge that divide and reinforce relationships.”

“We invite all of our Subcontractors to take advantage of the accessibility,” added Taylor. “Kaitlyn and I are here to help—to introduce Subcontractors to our Operations teams, show opportunities on our electronic Bid Board, and generally share HITT culture with those that stop by.”

Beyond making them feel welcome at HITT Headquarters, the team strives to recognize our Subcontractors and Suppliers for their dedication and performance. Our annual Subcontractor Appreciation Day—or Sub Day as it is fondly known—is a key tradition across the company. “This event is synonymous with who we are and how we value these relationships,” continued Taylor. “We look forward to this event as an opportunity to connect with our Subcontractor partners in an informal setting, allowing us to reinforce our business relationships with some laid back fun.”

In addition to Sub Day, we also take time out to recognize the successes of the past year. Each year at the event, we present the Myrtle L. Hitt Award of Excellence and the HITT Safety Award to acknowledge outstanding performance by Subcontractors. Voted on by HITT team members, the Myrtle L. Hitt award is given to a Subcontractor who exemplifies The HITT Way. The Safety Award is given by our Safety Department, and the winner is selected through observation of the company’s commitment to safety excellence.

In 2016, Casey Construction won both of these awards in an unusual “clean sweep.” “HITT goes above and beyond to build genuine relationships with their Subcontractors,” said President Steve Casey. “We were incredibly grateful to have been recognized, and look forward to many more opportunities to work with the HITT team.”

While this year marks our 22nd Sub Day, it’s part of 80 years’ worth of dedication to this community that we are so deeply connected to. We thank all of our Subcontractor partners for sharing in the journey, and encourage them to stop by anytime— after all, our door is always open.
